The Shepherd And His Dog Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBCCDEFFFGHIIJJDD KLLM

A shepherd with a single dogA
Was ask'd the reason whyB
He kept a dog whose least supplyB
Amounted to a loaf of breadC
For every day The people saidC
He'd better give the animalD
To guard the village seignior's hallE
For him a shepherd it would beF
A thriftier economyF
To keep small curs say two or threeF
That would not cost him half the foodG
And yet for watching be as goodH
The fools perhaps forgot to tellI
If they would fight the wolf as wellI
The silly shepherd giving heedJ
Cast off his dog of mastiff breedJ
And took three dogs to watch his cattleD
Which ate far less but fled in battleD
-
Not vain our tale if it convincesK
Small states that 'tis a wiser thingL
To trust a single powerful kingL
Than half a dozen petty princesM
