The Serpent And The File Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEFFGGHHIIJ KKLMMMNO

A
-
A serpent neighbour to a smithB
A neighbour bad to meddle withC
Went through his shop in search of foodD
But nothing found 'tis understoodE
To eat except a file of steelF
Of which he tried to make a mealF
The file without a spark of passionG
Address'd him in the following fashionG
'Poor simpleton you surely biteH
With less of sense than appetiteH
For ere from me you gainI
One quarter of a grainI
You'll break your teeth from ear to earJ
Time's are the only teeth I fear '-
-
This tale concerns those men of lettersK
Who good for nothing bite their bettersK
Their biting so is quite unwiseL
Think you ye literary sharksM
Your teeth will leave their marksM
Upon the deathless works you criticiseM
Fie fie fie menN
To you they're brass they're steel they're diamondO
