A Scythian philosopher austereA
Resolved his rigid life somewhat to cheerA
Perform'd the tour of Greece saw many thingsB
But best a sage one such as Virgil singsB
A simple rustic man that equal'd kingsB
From whom the gods would hardly bear the palmC
Like them unawed content and calmC
His fortune was a little nook of landD
And there the Scythian found him hook in handD
His fruit trees pruning Here he cropp'dE
A barren branch there slash'd and lopp'dE
Correcting Nature everywhereF
Who paid with usury his careF
'Pray why this wasteful havoc sir 'G
So spoke the wondering travellerH
'Can it I ask in reason's nameI
Be wise these harmless trees to maimI
Fling down that instrument of crimeJ
And leave them to the scythe of TimeJ
Full soon unhasten'd they will goK
To deck the banks of streams below 'G
Replied the tranquil gardenerH
'I humbly crave your pardon sirH
Excess is all my hook removesL
By which the rest more fruitful proves 'G
The philosophic travellerH
Once more within his country coldM
Himself of pruning hook laid holdM
And made a use most free and boldM
Prescribed to friends and counsel'd neighboursL
To imitate his pruning laboursL
The finest limbs he did not spareF
But pruned his orchard past all reasonN
Regarding neither time nor seasonN
Nor taking of the moon a careF
All wither'd droop'd and diedO
-
This Scythian I set besideO
The indiscriminating StoicP
The latter with a blade heroicP
Retrenches from his spirit sadQ
Desires and passions good and badQ
Not sparing e'en a harmless wishR
Against a tribe so VandalishR
With earnestness I here protestS
They maim our hearts they stupefyT
Their strongest springs if not their bestS
They make us cease to live before we dieU
