A block of marble was so fineA
To buy it did a sculptor hastenB
'What shall my chisel now 'tis mineA
A god a table or a basin 'C
-
'A god ' said he 'the thing shall beD
I'll arm it too with thunderE
Let people quake and bow the kneeD
With reverential wonder '-
-
So well the cunning artist wroughtF
All things within a mortal's reachG
That soon the marble wanted noughtF
Of being Jupiter but speechG
-
Indeed the man whose skill did makeH
Had scarcely laid his chisel downI
Before himself began to quakeH
And fear his manufacture's frownI
-
And even this excess of faithJ
The poet once scarce fell behindF
The hatred fearing and the wrathK
Of gods the product of his mindF
-
This trait we see in infancyD
Between the baby and its dollL
Of wax or china it may beD
A pocket stuff'd or folded shawlM
-
Imagination rules the heartF
And here we find the fountain headF
From whence the pagan errors startF
That o'er the teeming nations spreadF
-
With violent and flaming zealN
Each takes his own chimera's partF
Pygmalion doth a passion feelN
For Venus chisel'd by his artF
-
All men as far as in them liesO
Create realities of dreamsP
To truth our nature proves but iceQ
To falsehood fire it seemsP
