A block of marble was so fineA
To buy it did a sculptor hastenB
'What shall my chisel now 'tis mineA
A god a table or a basin 'C

'A god ' said he 'the thing shall beD
I'll arm it too with thunderE
Let people quake and bow the kneeD
With reverential wonder '-

So well the cunning artist wroughtF
All things within a mortal's reachG
That soon the marble wanted noughtF
Of being Jupiter but speechG

Indeed the man whose skill did makeH
Had scarcely laid his chisel downI
Before himself began to quakeH
And fear his manufacture's frownI

And even this excess of faithJ
The poet once scarce fell behindF
The hatred fearing and the wrathK
Of gods the product of his mindF
