The Quarrel Of The Dogs And Cats Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCCBDDEEFFGGHHII BBIIBBBJBJJ EEIIKK

In mansion deck'd with frieze and columnA
Dwelt dogs and cats in multitudesB
Decrees promulged in manner solemnA
Had pacified their ancient feudsB
Their lord had so arranged their meals and laboursB
And threaten'd quarrels with the whipC
That living in sweet cousinshipC
They edified their wondering neighboursB
At last some dainty plate to lickD
Or profitable bone to pickD
Bestow'd by some partialityE
Broke up the smooth equalityE
The side neglected were indignantF
At such a slight malignantF
From words to blows the altercationG
Soon grew a perfect conflagrationG
In hall and kitchen dog and catH
Took sides with zeal for this or thatH
New rules upon the cat side fallingI
Produced tremendous caterwaulingI
Their advocate against such rules as theseB
Advised recurrence to the old decreesB
They search'd in vain for hidden in a nookI
The thievish mice had eaten up the bookI
Another quarrel in a triceB
Made many sufferers with the miceB
For many a veteran whisker'd faceB
With craft and cunning richly storedJ
And grudges old against the raceB
Now watch'd to put them to the swordJ
Nor mourn'd for this that mansion's lordJ
-
Look wheresoever we will we seeE
No creature from opponents freeE
'Tis nature's law for earth and skyI
'Twere vain to ask the reason whyI
God's works are good I cannot doubt itK
And that is all I know about itK
