Enthroned by an eternal lawA
Hath Discord reign'd throughout the universeB
In proof I might from this our planet drawA
A thousand instances diverseB
Within the circle of our viewC
This queen hath subjects not a fewC
Beginning with the elementsD
It is astonishing to seeE
How they have stood to all intentsF
As wrestlers from eternityE
Besides these four great potentatesG
Old stubborn earth fire flood and airH
How many other smaller statesG
Are waging everlasting warI
In mansion deck'd with frieze and columnJ
Dwelt dogs and cats in multitudesK
Decrees promulged in manner solemnJ
Had pacified their ancient feudsK
Their lord had so arranged their meals and laboursK
And threaten'd quarrels with the whipL
That living in sweet cousinshipL
They edified their wondering neighboursK
At last some dainty plate to lickM
Or profitable bone to pickM
Bestow'd by some partialityE
Broke up the smooth equalityE
The side neglected were indignantN
At such a slight malignantN
Some writers make the whole dispute beginO
With favours to a bitch while lying inO
Whate'er the cause the altercationP
Soon grew a perfect conflagrationP
In hall and kitchen dog and catQ
Took sides with zeal for this or thatQ
New rules upon the cat side fallingR
Produced tremendous caterwaulingR
Their advocate against such rules as theseK
Advised recurrence to the old decreesK
They search'd in vain for hidden in a nookR
The thievish mice had eaten up the bookR
Another quarrel in a triceK
Made many sufferers with the miceK
For many a veteran whisker'd faceK
With craft and cunning richly storedS
And grudges old against the raceK
Now watch'd to put them to the swordS
Nor mourn'd for this that mansion's lordS
-
Resuming our discourse we seeE
No creature from opponents freeE
'Tis nature's law for earth and skyR
'Twere vain to ask the reason whyR
God's works are good I cannot doubt itT
And that is all I know about itT
I know however that the causeK
Which hath our human quarrels broughtU
Three quarters of the time is noughtU
That will be is or ever wasK
Ye veterans in state and churchV
At threescore years indeedU
It seems there still is needU
To give you lessons with the birchV
