The Old Woman And Her Two Servants Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCDCDECCCCCFFGGGGHI GGJ GGGGGGKKKLCLCMM

A
-
A beldam kept two spinning maidsB
Who plied so handily their tradesB
Those spinning sisters down belowC
Were bunglers when compared with theseD
No care did this old woman knowC
But giving tasks as she might pleaseD
No sooner did the god of dayE
His glorious locks enkindleC
Than both the wheels began to playC
And from each whirling spindleC
Forth danced the thread right merrilyC
And back was coil'd unceasinglyC
Soon as the dawn I say its tresses show'dF
A graceless cock most punctual crow'dF
The beldam roused more graceless yetG
In greasy petticoat bedightG
Struck up her farthing lightG
And then forthwith the bed besetG
Where deeply blessedly did snoreH
Those two maid servants tired and poorI
One oped an eye an arm one stretch'dG
And both their breath most sadly fetch'dG
This threat concealing in the sighJ
'That cursed cock shall surely die '-
And so he did they cut his throatG
And put to sleep his rousing noteG
And yet this murder mended notG
The cruel hardship of their lotG
For now the twain were scarce in bedG
Before they heard the summons dreadG
The beldam full of apprehensionK
Lest oversleep should cause detentionK
Ran like a goblin through her mansionK
Thus often when one thinksL
To clear himself from illC
His effort only sinksL
Him in the deeper stillC
The beldam acting for the cockM
Was Scylla for Charybdis' rockM
