A man was planting at fourscoreB
Three striplings who their satchels woreB
'In building ' cried 'the sense were moreB
But then to plant young trees at that ageC
The man is surely in his dotageC
Pray in the name of common senseD
What fruit can he expect to gatherB
Of all this labour and expenseD
Why he must live like Lamech's fatherB
What use for thee grey headed manE
To load the remnant of thy spanE
With care for days that never can be thineF
Thyself to thought of errors past resignF
Long growing hope and lofty planE
Leave thou to us to whom such things belong '-
'To you ' replied the old man hale and strongG
'I dare pronounce you altogether wrongG
The settled part of man's estateH
Is very brief and comes full lateH
To those pale gaming sisters trineF
Your lives are stakes as well as mineF
While so uncertain is the sequelI
Our terms of future life are equalI
For none can tell who last shall close his eyesJ
Upon the glories of these azure skiesJ
Nor any moment give us ere it fliesJ
Assurance that another such shall riseJ
But my descendants whosoe'er they beK
Shall owe these cooling fruits and shades to meK
Do you acquit yourselves in wisdom's sightL
From ministering to other hearts delightL
Why boys this is the fruit I gather nowM
And sweeter never blush'd on bended boughM
Of this to morrow I may take my fillN
Indeed I may enjoy its sweetness tillN
I see full many mornings chase the gloomsJ
From off the marble of your youthful tombs '-
The grey beard man was right One of the threeK
Embarking foreign lands to seeK
Was drown'd within the very portO
In quest of dignity at courtO
Another met his country's foeP
And perish'd by a random blowP
The third was kill'd by falling from a treeK
Which he himself would graft The threeK
Were mourn'd by him of hoary headQ
Who chisel'd on each monumentR
On doing good intentS
The things which we have saidQ
