-
A monkey and a leopard wereB
The rivals at a country fairC
Each advertised his own attractionsD
Said one 'Good sirs the highest placeE
My merit knows for of his graceE
The king hath seen me face to faceE
And judging by his looks and actionsD
I gave the best of satisfactionsD
When I am dead 'tis plain enoughF
My skin will make his royal muffF
So richly is it streak'd and spottedG
So delicately waved and dottedG
Its various beauty cannot fail to please '-
And thus invited everybody seesH
But soon they see and soon departI
The monkey's show bill to the martI
His merits thus sets forth the whileJ
All in his own peculiar styleJ
'Come gentlemen I pray you comeK
In magic arts I am at homeL
The whole variety in whichM
My neighbour boasts himself so richM
Is to his simple skin confinedN
While mine is living in the mindN
Your humble servant Monsieur GilleJ
The son in law to TicklevilleJ
Pope's monkey and of great renownO
Is now just freshly come to townO
Arrived in three bateaux expressP
Your worships to addressP
For he can speak you understandQ
Can dance and practise sleight of handQ
Can jump through hoops and balance sticksR
In short can do a thousand tricksR
And all for blancos sixR
Not messieurs for a souR
And if you think the price won't doS
When you have seen then he'll restoreT
Each man his money at the door '-
-
The ape was not to reason blindN
For who in wealth of dress can findN
Such charms as dwell in wealth of mindN
One meets our ever new desiresR
The other in a moment tiresR
-
Alas how many lords there areU
Of mighty sway and lofty mienV
Who like this leopard at the fairC
Show all their talents on the skinW
