A
-
Long since a Mogul saw in dreamB
A vizier in Elysian blissC
No higher joy could be or seemB
Or purer than was ever hisD
Elsewhere was dream'd of by the sameE
A wretched hermit wrapp'd in flameE
Whose lot e'en touch'd so pain'd was heF
The partners of his miseryF
Was Minos mock'd or had these ghostsG
By some mistake exchanged their postsG
Surprise at this the vision brokeH
The dreamer suddenly awokeH
Some mystery suspecting in itI
He got a wise one to explain itI
Replied the sage interpreterJ
'Let not the thing a marvel seemB
There is a meaning in your dreamB
If I have aught of knowledge sirJ
It covers counsel from the godsK
While tenanting these clay abodesK
This vizier sometimes gladly soughtL
The solitude that favours thoughtL
Whereas the hermit in his cotM
Had longings for a vizier's lot '-
To this interpretation dared I addN
The love of solitude I would inspireO
It satisfies the heart's desireJ
With unencumber'd gifts and gladN
Heaven planted joys of stingless sweetP
Aye springing up beneath our feetP
O Solitude whose secret charms I knowQ
Retreats that I have loved when shall I goQ
To taste far from a world of din and noiseK
Your shades so fresh where silence has a voiceK
When shall their soothing gloom my refuge beF
When shall the sacred Nine from courts afarR
And cities with all solitude at warS
Engross entire and teach their votaryS
The stealthy movements of the spangled nightsK
The names and virtues of those errant lightsK
Which rule o'er human character and fateT
Or if not born to purposes so greatT
The streams at least shall win my heartfelt thanksK
While in my verse I paint their flowery banksK
Fate shall not weave my life with golden threadU
Nor 'neath rich fret work on a purple bedU
Shall I repose full late my care worn headU
But will my sleep be less a treasureS
Less deep thereby and full of pleasureS
I vow it sweet and gentle as the dewV
Within those deserts sacrifices newV
And when the time shall come to yield my breathW
Without remorse I'll join the ranks of DeathW
