A little fish will growB
If life be spared a greatC
But yet to let him goB
And for his growing waitC
May not be very wiseD
As 'tis not sure your baitC
Will catch him when of sizeD
Upon a river bank a fisher tookE
A tiny troutling from his hookE
Said he ''Twill serve to count at leastF
As the beginning of my feastF
And so I'll put it with the rest '-
This little fish thus caughtG
His clemency besoughtG
'What will your honour do with meH
I'm not a mouthful as you seeH
Pray let me grow to be a troutG
And then come here and fish me outG
Some alderman who likes things niceI
Will buy me then at any priceI
But now a hundred such you'll have to fishJ
To make a single good for nothing dish '-
'Well well be it so ' replied the fisherK
'My little fish who play the preacherK
The frying pan must be your lotG
Although no doubt you like it notG
I fry the fry that can be got '-

In some things men of senseL
Prefer the present to the future tenseL
