A Lion old and impotent with goutA
Would have some cure for age found outA
This king from every speciesB
Call'd to his aid the leechesC
They came from quacks without degreeD
To doctors of the highest feeD
Advised prescribed talk'd learnedlyE
But with the restF
Came not Sir Cunning Fox M DD
Sir Wolf the royal couch attendedG
And his suspicions there express'dF
Forthwith his majesty offendedG
Resolved Sir Cunning Fox should comeH
And sent to smoke him from his homeI
He came was duly usher'd inJ
And knowing where Sir Wolf had beenJ
Said Sire abused your royal earK
Has been by rumours insincereL
To wit that I've been self exemptM
From coming here through sheer contemptM
But sire your royal health to aidN
I vow'd to make a pilgrimageO
And on my way met doctors sageP
In skill the wonder of the ageP
Whom carefully I did consultQ
About that great debilityD
Term'd in the books senilityD
Of which you fear with reason the resultQ
You lack they say the vital heatR
By age extreme become effeteR
Drawn from a living wolf the hideS
Should warm and smoking be appliedS
Sir Wolf here won't refuse to giveT
His hide to cure you as I liveU
The king was pleased with this adviceV
Flay'd jointed served up in a triceV
Sir Wolf first wrapped the monarch upW
Then furnish'd him whereon to supW
-
Beware ye courtiers lest ye gainX
By slander's arts less power than painX
