A
-
His lion majesty would know one dayB
What bestial tribes were subject to his swayB
He therefore gave his vassals allC
By deputies a callC
Despatching everywhereD
A written circularE
Which bore his seal and did importF
His majesty would hold his courtF
A month most splendidlyG
A feast would open his leveeG
Which done Sir Jocko's sleightH
Would give the court delightH
By such sublime magnificenceI
The king would show his power immenseI
-
Now were they gather'd allC
Within the royal hallC
And such a hall The charnel scentJ
Would make the strongest nerves relentJ
The bear put up his paw to closeI
The double access of his noseI
The act had better been omittedK
His throne at once the monarch quittedK
And sent to Pluto's court the bearD
To show his delicacy thereD
The ape approved the cruel deedK
A thorough flatterer by breedK
He praised the prince's wrath and clawsI
He praised the odour and its causeI
Judged by the fragrance of that caveL
The amber of the Baltic waveL
The rose the pink the hawthorn bankM
Might with the vulgar garlic rankM
The mark his flattery overshotK
And made him share poor Bruin's lotK
This lion playing in his wayB
The part of Don CaligulaC
The fox approach'd 'Now ' said the kingN
'Apply your nostrils to this thingN
And let me hear without disguiseI
The judgment of a beast so wise '-
The fox replied 'Your Majesty will pleaseI
Excuse' and here he took good care to sneezeI
'Afflicted with a dreadful coldK
Your majesty need not be toldK
My sense of smell is mostly gone '-
-
From danger thus withdrawnO
He teaches us the whileC
That one to gain the smileC
Of kings must hold the middle placeI
'Twixt blunt rebuke and fulsome praiseI
And sometimes use with easy graceI
The language of the Norman raceI
