-
'Go paltry insect nature's meanest brat '-
Thus said the royal lion to the gnatB
The gnat declared immediate warC
'Think you ' said he 'your royal nameD
To me worth caring forC
Think you I tremble at your power or fameD
The ox is bigger far than youE
Yet him I drive and all his crew '-
This said as one that did no fear oweF
Himself he blew the battle chargeG
Himself both trumpeter and heroF
At first he play'd about at largeG
Then on the lion's neck at leisure settledH
And there the royal beast full sorely nettledH
With foaming mouth and flashing eyeI
He roars All creatures hide or flyI
Such mortal terror atB
The work of one poor gnatB
With constant change of his attackJ
The snout now stinging now the backJ
And now the chambers of the noseK
The pigmy fly no mercy showsK
The lion's rage was at its heightL
His viewless foe now laugh'd outrightL
When on his battle ground he sawM
That every savage tooth and clawM
Had got its proper beautyN
By doing bloody dutyN
Himself the hapless lion tore his hideO
And lash'd with sounding tail from side to sideO
Ah bootless blow and bite and curseP
He beat the harmless air and worseP
For though so fierce and stoutQ
By effort wearied outQ
He fainted fell gave up the quarrelR
The gnat retires with verdant laurelR
Now rings his trumpet clangS
As at the charge it rangS
But while his triumph note he blowsK
Straight on our valiant conqueror goesK
A spider's ambuscade to meetT
And make its web his winding sheetT
-
We often have the most to fearU
From those we most despiseV
Again great risks a man may clearU
Who by the smallest diesV
