A
-
A noted thief the kiteB
Had set a neighbourhood in frightB
And raised the clamorous noiseC
Of all the village boysC
When by misfortune sad to sayD
A nightingale fell in his wayD
Spring's herald begg'd him not to eatE
A bird for music not for meatE
'O spare ' cried she 'and I'll relateF
'The crime of Tereus and his fate '-
'What's Tereus Is it food for kites '-
'No but a king of female rightsG
The villain spoiler whom I taughtH
A lesson with repentance fraughtH
And should it please you not to killI
My song about his fallJ
Your very heart shall thrillI
As it indeed does all '-
Replied the kite a 'pretty thingK
When I am faint and famishingK
To let you go and hear you sing '-
'Ah but I entertain the king '-
'Well when he takes you let him hearL
Your tale full wonderful no doubtM
For me a kite I'll go without '-
An empty stomach hath no earL
