Some seek for jokers I avoidB
A joke must be to be enjoy'dB
Of wisdom's words by wit employ'dB
God never meant for men of senseC
The wits that joke to give offenceC
-
Perchance of these I shall be ableD
To show you one preserved in fableD
A joker at a banker's tableD
Most amply spread to satisfyE
The height of epicurean wishesC
Had nothing near but little fishesC
So taking several of the fryE
He whisper'd to them very nighE
And seem'd to listen for replyE
The guests much wonder'd what it meantF
And stared upon him all intentF
The joker then with sober faceC
Politely thus explain'd the caseC
'A friend of mine to India boundG
Has been I fearH
Within a yearH
By rocks or tempests wreck'd and drown'dG
I ask'd these strangers from the seaC
To tell me where my friend might beC
But all replied they were too youngI
To know the least of such a matterJ
The older fish could tell me betterJ
Pray may I hear some older tongue '-
What relish had the gentlefolksC
For such a sample of his jokesC
Is more than I can now relateK
They put I'm sure upon his plateK
A monster of so old a dateK
He must have known the names and fateK
Of all the daring voyagersC
Who following the moon and starsC
Have by mischances sunk their bonesC
Within the realms of Davy JonesC
And who for centuries had seenL
Far down within the fathomlessC
Where whales themselves are sceptrelessC
The ancients in their halls of greenL
