-
The horses have not always beenB
The humble slaves of menC
When in the far off pastD
The fare of gentlemen was mastD
And even hats were never feltE
Horse ass and mule in forests dweltE
Nor saw one then as in these agesF
So many saddles housings pillionsF
Such splendid equipagesF
With golden lace postilionsF
Such harnesses for cattleG
To be consumed in battleG
As one saw not so many feastsF
And people married by the priestsF
The horse fell out within that spaceF
With the antler'd stag so fleetly madeH
He could not catch him in a raceF
And so he came to man for aidH
Man first his suppliant bittedH
Then on his back well seatedH
Gave chase with spear and rested notH
Till to the ground the foe he broughtH
This done the honest horse quite blindlyI
Thus thank'd his benefactor kindlyI
'Dear sir I'm much obliged to youJ
I'll back to savage life Adieu '-
'O no ' the man repliedH
'You'd better here abideH
I know too well your useF
Here free from all abuseF
Remain a liege to meI
And large your provender shall be '-
Alas good housing or good cheerK
That costs one's liberty is dearK
The horse his folly now perceivedH
But quite too late he grievedH
No grief his fate could alterL
His stall was built and there he livedH
And died there in his halterL
Ah wise had he one small offence forgotH
Revenge however sweet is dearly boughtH
By that one good which gone all else is noughtH
