Two parts the serpent hasB
Of men the enemiesC
The head and tail the sameD
Have won a mighty fameD
Next to the cruel FatesE
So that indeed henceF
They once had great debatesE
About precedenceG
The first had always gone aheadH
The tail had been for ever ledH
And now to Heaven it pray'dI
And saidH
'O many and many a leagueJ
Dragg'd on in sore fatigueJ
Behind his back I goK
Shall he for ever use me soK
Am I his humble servantL
No Thanks to God most ferventL
His brother I was bornM
And not his slave forlornM
The self same blood in bothN
I'm just as good as heO
A poison dwells in meO
As virulent as dothP
In him In mercy heedQ
And grant me this decreeO
That I in turn may leadH
My brother follow meO
My course shall be so wiseR
That no complaint shall rise '-

With cruel kindness Heaven grantedS
The very thing he blindly wantedS
To such desires of beasts and menT
Though often deaf it was not thenT
At once this novel guideU
That saw no more in broad daylightV
Than in the murk of darkest nightV
His powers of leading triedU
Struck trees and men and stones and bricksW
And led his brother straight to StyxW
And to the same unlovely homeX
Some states by such an error comeY
