A father once whose sons were twoA
For each a gift had much adoA
At last upon this course he fellB
'My sons ' said he 'within our wellB
Two treasures lodge as I am toldC
The one a sunken piece of goldC
A bowl it may be or a pitcherD
The other is a thing far richerD
These treasures if you can but findE
Each may be suited to his mindE
For both are precious in their kindE
To gain the one you'll need a hookF
The other will but cost a lookF
But O of this I pray bewareG
You who may choose the tempting shareG
Too eager fishing for the pitcherD
May ruin that which is far richer 'H
-
Out ran the boys their gifts to drawI
But eagerness was check'd with aweJ
How could there be a richer prizeK
Than solid gold beneath the skiesK
Or if there could how could it dwellB
Within their own old mossy wellB
Were questions which excited wonderD
And kept their headlong av'rice underD
The golden cup each fear'd to chooseL
Lest he the better gift should loseL
And so resolved our prudent pairG
The gifts in common they would shareG
The well was open to the skyM
As o'er its curb they keenly pryM
It seems a tunnel piercing throughA
From sky to sky from blue to blueA
And at its nether mouth each seesN
A brace of their antipodesN
With earnest faces peering upO
As if themselves might seek the cupO
'Ha ' said the elder with a laughP
'We need not share it by the halfP
The mystery is clear to meQ
That richer gift to all is freeQ
Be only as that water trueA
And then the whole belongs to you '-
-
That truth itself was worth so muchR
It cannot be supposed that suchR
A pair of lads were satisfiedS
And yet they were before they diedS
But whether they fish'd up the goldC
I'm sure I never have been toldC
Thus much they learn'd I take for grantedT
And that was what their father wantedT
If truth for wealth we sacrificeN
We throw away the richer prizeN
