A GASCON being heard one day to swearA
That he'd possess'd a certain lovely fairA
Was played a wily trick and nicely servedB
'Twas clear from truth he shamefully had swervedB
But those who scandal propagate belowC
Are prophets thought and ev'ry action knowC
While good if spoken scarcely is believedD
And must be viewed or not for truth receivedD
-
THE dame indeed the Gascon only jeeredE
And e'er denied herself when he appearedE
But when she met the wight who sought to shineF
And called her angel beauteous and divineF
She fled and hastened to a female friendG
Where she could laugh and at her ease unbendG
-
NEAR Phillis our fair fugitive there dwelledH
One Eurilas his nearest neighbour heldH
His wife was Cloris 'twas with her our doveI
Took shelter from the Gascon's forward loveI
Whose name was Dorilas and Damon youngJ
The Gascon's friend on whom gay Cloris hungJ
-
SWEET Phillis by her manner you might seeK
From sly amours and dark intrigues was freeK
The value to possess her no one knewL
Though all admired the lovely belle at viewL
Just twenty years she counted at the timeM
And now a widow was though in her primeM
Her spouse an aged dotard worth a plumN
Of those whose loss to mourn no tears e'er comeN
-
OUR seraph fair such loveliness possessedO
In num'rous ways a Gascon could have blessedO
Above below appeared angelic charmsP
'Twas Paradise 'twas Heav'n within her armsP
-
THE Gascon was a Gascon would you moreQ
Who knows a Gascon knows at least a scoreQ
I need not say what solemn vows he madeR
Alike with Normans Gascons are portrayedR
Their oaths indeed won't pass for Gospel truthS
But we believe that Dorilas the youthS
Loved Phillis to his soul our lady fairA
Yet he would fain be thought successful thereA
-
ONE day said Phillis with unusual gleeK
Pretending with the Gascon to be freeK
A favour do me nothing very greatT
Assist to dupe one jealous of his mateT
You'll find it very easy to be doneU
And doubtless 'twill produce a deal of funU
'Tis our request the plot you'll say is deepV
That you this night with Cloris's husband sleepV
Some disagreement with her gay gallantW
Requires that she a night at least should grantX
To settle diff'rences now we desireY
That you'll to bed with Eurilas retireZ
There's not a doubt he'll think his Cloris nearA2
He never touches her so nothing fearA2
For whether jealousy or other painsB2
He constantly from intercourse abstainsB2
Snores through the night and if a cap he seesB2
Believes his wife in bed and feels at easeB2
We'll properly equip you as a belleC2
And I will certainly reward you wellC2
-
TO gain but Phillis's smiles the Gascon saidD2
He'd with the very devil go to bedD2
-
THE night arrived our wight the chamber tracedE2
The lights extinguished Eurilas too placedE2
The Gascon 'gan to tremble in a triceB2
And soon with terror grew as cold as iceB2
Durst neither spit nor cough still less encroachF2
And seemed to shrink least t'other should approachF2
Crept near the edge would scarcely room affordG2
And could have passed the scabbard of a swordG2
-
OFT in the night his bed fellow turned roundH2
At length a finger on his nose he foundH2
Which Dorilas exceedingly distressedO
But more inquietude was in his breastO
For fear the husband amorous should growC
From which incalculable ills might flowC
-
OUR Gascon ev'ry minute knew alarmI2
'Twas now a leg stretched out and then an armI2
He even thought he felt the husband's beardE
But presently arrived what more he fearedE
-
A BELL conveniently was near the bedD2
Which Eurilas to ring was often ledD2
At this the Gascon swooned so great his fearA2
And swore for ever he'd renounce his dearA2
But no one coming Eurilas once moreQ
Resumed his place and 'gan again to snoreQ
-
AT length before the sun his head had rearedE
The door was opened and a torch appearedE
Misfortune then he fancied full in sightJ2
More pleased he'd been to rise without a lightJ2
And clearly thought 'twas over with him nowK2
The flame approached the drops ran o'er his browK2
With terror he for pardon humbly prayedR
You have it cried a fair be not dismayedR
'Twas Phillis spoke who Eurilas's placeB2
Had filled throughout the night with wily graceB2
And now to Damon and his Cloris flewL
With ridicule the Gascon to pursueL
Recounted all the terrors and affrightR
Which Dorilas had felt throughout the nightR
To mortify still more the silly swainL2
And fill his soul with ev'ry poignant painL2
She gave a glimpse of beauties to his viewL
And from his presence instantly withdrewL
