Left kingless by the lion's deathB
The beasts once met our story saithB
Some fit successor to installC
Forth from a dragon guarded moated placeD
The crown was brought and taken from its caseD
And being tried by turns on allC
The heads of most were found too smallC
Some horn d were and some too bigE
Not one would fit the regal gearF
For ever ripe for such a rigE
The monkey looking very queerF
Approach'd with antics and grimacesG
And after scores of monkey facesH
With what would seem a gracious stoopI
Pass'd through the crown as through a hoopI
The beasts diverted with the thingJ
Did homage to him as their kingJ
The fox alone the vote regrettedK
But yet in public never frettedK
When he his compliments had paidL
To royalty thus newly madeL
'Great sire I know a place ' said heM
'Where lies conceal'd a treasureN
Which by the right of royaltyM
Should bide your royal pleasure '-
The king lack'd not an appetiteO
For such financial pelfP
And not to lose his royal rightO
Ran straight to see it for himselfP
It was a trap and he was caughtQ
Said Renard 'Would you have it thoughtR
You ape that you can fill a throneS
And guard the rights of all aloneS
Not knowing how to guard your own '-
-
The beasts all gather'd from the farceT
That stuff for kings is very scarceU
