A
-
Thrysis who for his Annette dearB
Made music with his flute and voiceC
Which might have roused the dead to hearD
And in their silent graves rejoiceC
Sang once the livelong dayE
In the flowery month of MayE
Up and down a meadow brookF
While Annette fish'd with line and hookF
But ne'er a fish would biteG
So the shepherdess's baitH
Drew not a fish to its fateH
From morning dawn till nightG
The shepherd who by his charming songsI
Had drawn savage beasts to him in throngsI
And done with them as he pleased toJ
Thought that he could serve the fish soK
'O citizens ' he sang 'of this waterL
Leave your Naiad in her grot profoundM
Come and see the blue sky's lovely daughterL
Who a thousand times more will charm youJ
Fear not that her prison will harm youJ
Though there you should chance to get boundM
'Tis only to us men she is cruelN
You she will treat kindlyO
A snug little pond she'll find yeO
Clearer than a crystal jewelN
Where you may all live and do wellP
Or if by chance some fewJ
Should find their fateH
Conceal'd in the baitH
The happier still are youJ
For envied is the death that's metQ
At the hands of sweet Annette '-
This eloquence not effectingR
The object of his wishesS
Since it failed in collectingR
The deaf and dumb fishesT
His sweet preaching wastedU
His honey'd talk untastedU
A net the shepherd seized and pouncingR
With a fell scoop at the scaly fryV
He caught them and now madly flouncingR
At the feet of his Annette they lieV
-
O ye shepherds whose sheep men areW
To trust in reason never dareX
The arts of eloquence sublimeY
Are not within your callingR
Your fish were caught from oldest timeY
By dint of nets and haulingR
