A
-
You often hear a sweet seductive callB
If wise you haste towards it not at allB
And if you heed my apologueC
You act like John de Nivelle's dogC
-
A capon citizen of MansD
Was summon'd from a throngC
To answer to the village squireE
Before tribunal call'd the fireF
The matter to disguiseG
The kitchen sheriff wiseG
Cried 'Biddy Biddy Biddy '-
But not a moment did heH
This Norman and a halfI
The smooth official trustJ
'Your bait ' said he 'is dustJ
And I'm too old for chaff '-
Meantime a falcon on his perchK
Observed the flight and searchK
In man by instinct or experienceL
The capons have so little confidenceL
That this was not without much trouble caughtM
Though for a splendid supper soughtN
To lie the morrow nightO
In brilliant candle lightO
Supinely on a dishP
'Midst viands fowl and fishP
With all the ease that heart could wishP
This honour from his master kindQ
The fowl would gladly have declinedQ
Outcried the bird of chaseR
As in the weeds he eyed the skulker's faceR
'Why what a stupid blockhead raceR
Such witless brainless foolsS
Might well defy the schoolsS
For me I understandT
To chase at wordU
The swiftest birdU
Aloft o'er sea or landT
At slightest beckC
Returning quickC
To perch upon my master's handT
There at his window he appearsV
He waits thee hasten hast no ears '-
'Ah that I have ' the fowl repliedW
'But what from master might betideW
Or cook with cleaver at his sideW
Return you may for such a callB
But let me fly their fatal hallB
And spare your mirth at my expenseX
Whate'er I lack 'tis not the senseX
To know that all this sweet toned breathY
Is spent to lure me to my deathY
If you had seen upon the spitZ
As many of the falcons roastA2
As I have of the capon hostA2
You would not thus reproach my wit '-
