A
-
Some beast with horns did goreB
The lion and that sovereign dreadC
Resolved to suffer so no moreB
Straight banish'd from his realm 'tis saidC
All sorts of beasts with hornsD
Rams bulls goats stags and unicornsD
Such brutes all promptly fledC
A hare the shadow of his ears perceivingE
Could hardly help believingE
That some vile spy for horns would take themF
And food for accusation make themF
'Adieu ' said he 'my neighbour cricketG
I take my foreign ticketG
My ears should I stay hereH
Will turn to horns I fearI
And were they shorter than a bird'sD
I fear the effect of words '-
'These horns ' the cricket answer'd 'whyJ
God made them ears who can deny '-
'Yes ' said the coward 'still they'll make them hornsD
And horns perhaps of unicornsD
In vain shall I protestK
With all the learning of the schoolsD
My reasons they will send to restK
In th' Hospital of Fools '-
