A
-
A certain hollow treeB
Was tenanted by threeB
An eagle held a lofty boughC
The hollow root a wild wood sowC
A female cat between the twoD
All busy with maternal laboursC
They lived awhile obliging neighboursC
At last the cat's deceitful tongueE
Broke up the peace of old and youngE
Up climbing to the eagle's nestF
She said with whisker'd lips compress'dF
'Our death or what as much we mothers fearG
That of our helpless offspring dearG
Is surely drawing nearG
Beneath our feet see you not howC
Destruction's plotted by the sowC
Her constant digging soon or lateH
Our proud old castle will uprootI
And then O sad and shocking fateH
She'll eat our young ones as the fruitI
Were there but hope of saving oneJ
'Twould soothe somewhat my bitter moan '-
Thus leaving apprehensions hideousC
Down went the puss perfidiousC
To where the sow no longer diggingK
Was in the very act of piggingK
'Good friend and neighbour ' whisper'd sheB
'I warn you on your guard to beB
Your pigs should you but leave a minuteL
This eagle here will seize them in itM
Speak not of this I beg at allN
Lest on my head her wrath should fall '-
Another breast with fear inspiredO
With fiendish joy the cat retiredP
The eagle ventured no egressC
To feed her young the sow still lessC
Fools they to think that any curseC
Than ghastly famine could be worseC
Both staid at home resolved and obstinateL
To save their young ones from impending fateH
The royal bird for fear of mineQ
For fear of royal claws the swineQ
All died at length with hungerR
The older and the youngerR
There staid of eagle race or boarS
Not one this side of death's dread doorS
A sad misfortune whichT
The wicked cats made richT
O what is there of hellish plotU
The treacherous tongue dares notU
Of all the ills Pandora's box outpour'dU
Deceit I think is most to be abhorr'dU
