The Dog And His Master's Dinner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDDCEEEEFFGGHHIJ JIKKKLLMLNNOOPQ RSTA

Our eyes are not made proof against the fairA
Nor hands against the touch of goldB
Fidelity is sadly rareA
And has been from the days of oldB
Well taught his appetite to checkC
And do full many a handy trickD
A dog was trotting light and quickD
His master's dinner on his neckC
A temperate self denying dog was heE
More than with such a load he liked to beE
But still he was while many such as weE
Would not have scrupled to make freeE
Strange that to dogs a virtue you may teachF
Which do your best to men you vainly preachF
This dog of ours thus richly fitted outG
A mastiff met who wish'd the meat no doubtG
To get it was less easy than he thoughtH
The porter laid it down and foughtH
Meantime some other dogs arriveI
Such dogs are always thick enoughJ
And fearing neither kick nor cuffJ
Upon the public thriveI
Our hero thus o'ermatch'd and press'dK
The meat in danger manifestK
Is fain to share it with the restK
And looking very calm and wiseL
No anger gentlemen he criesL
My morsel will myself sufficeM
The rest shall be your welcome prizeL
With this the first his charge to violateN
He snaps a mouthful from his freightN
Then follow mastiff cur and pupO
Till all is cleanly eaten upO
Not sparingly the party feastedP
And not a dog of all but tastedQ
-
In some such manner men abuseR
Of towns and states the revenuesS
The sheriffs aldermen and mayorT
Come in for each a liberal shareA
