Upon a sandy uphill road | B |
Which naked in the sunshine glow'd | B |
Six lusty horses drew a coach | C |
Dames monks and invalids its load | B |
On foot outside at leisure trode | B |
The team all weary stopp'd and blow'd | B |
Whereon there did a fly approach | C |
And with a vastly business air | D |
Cheer'd up the horses with his buzz | E |
Now pricked them here now prick'd them there | D |
As neatly as a jockey does | E |
And thought the while he knew 'twas so | F |
He made the team and carriage go | F |
On carriage pole sometimes alighting | F |
Or driver's nose and biting | F |
And when the whole did get in motion | G |
Confirm'd and settled in the notion | G |
He took himself the total glory | H |
Flew back and forth in wondrous hurry | H |
And as he buzz'd about the cattle | I |
Seem'd like a sergeant in a battle | I |
The files and squadrons leading on | J |
To where the victory is won | G |
Thus charged with all the commonweal | I |
This single fly began to feel | I |
Responsibility too great | B |
And cares a grievous crushing weight | B |
And made complaint that none would aid | B |
The horses up the tedious hill | I |
The monk his prayers at leisure said | B |
Fine time to pray the dames at will | I |
Were singing songs not greatly needed | B |
Thus in their ears he sharply sang | F |
And notes of indignation ran | K |
Notes after all not greatly heeded | B |
Erelong the coach was on the top | L |
'Now ' said the fly 'my hearties stop | L |
And breathe I've got you up the hill | I |
And Messrs Horses let me say | M |
I need not ask you if you will | I |
A proper compensation pay ' | - |
- | |
Thus certain ever bustling noddies | M |
Are seen in every great affair | D |
Important swelling busy bodies | M |
And bores 'tis easier to bear | D |
Than chase them from their needless care | D |
