A
-
A bachelor caress'd his catB
A darling fair and delicateC
So deep in love he thought her mewD
The sweetest voice he ever knewD
By prayers and tears and magic artE
The man got Fate to take his partE
And lo one morning at his sideF
His cat transform'd became his brideF
In wedded state our man was seenG
The fool in courtship he had beenH
No lover e'er was so bewitch'dI
By any maiden's charmsJ
As was this husband so enrich'dI
By hers within his armsJ
He praised her beauties this and thatB
And saw there nothing of the catB
In short by passion's aid heK
Thought her a perfect ladyK
-
'Twas night some carpet gnawing miceL
Disturb'd the nuptial joysM
Excited by the noiseM
The bride sprang at them in a triceL
The mice were scared and fledN
The bride scarce in her bedN
The gnawing heard and sprang againO
And this time not in vainP
For in this novel form array'dQ
Of her the mice were less afraidQ
Through life she loved this mousing courseR
So great is stubborn nature's forceR
-
In mockery of change the oldS
Will keep their youthful bentT
When once the cloth has got its foldS
The smelling pot its scentT
In vain your efforts and your careU
To make them other than they areV
To work reform do what you willW
Old habit will be habit stillW
Nor fork nor strap can mend its mannersX
Nor cudgel blows beat down its bannersX
Secure the doors against the renterY
And through the windows it will enterY
