The cat and fox when saints were all the rageA
Together went on pilgrimageB
Arch hypocrites and swindlers theyC
By sleight of face and sleight of pawD
Regardless both of right and lawD
Contrived expenses to repayC
By eating many a fowl and cheeseE
And other tricks as bad as theseE
Disputing served them to beguileF
The road of many a weary mileF
Disputing but for this resortG
The world would go to sleep in shortG
Our pilgrims as a thing of courseH
Disputed till their throats were hoarseH
Then dropping to a lower toneI
They talk'd of this and talk'd of thatJ
Till Renard whisper'd to the catJ
'You think yourself a knowing oneK
How many cunning tricks have youL
For I've a hundred old and newL
All ready in my haversack 'M
The cat replied 'I do not lackN
Though with but one providedO
And truth to honour for that matterP
I hold it than a thousand better 'M
In fresh dispute they sidedO
And loudly were they at it whenQ
Approach'd a mob of dogs and menQ
'Now ' said the cat 'your tricks ransackN
And put your cunning brains to rackN
One life to save I'll show you mineR
A trick you see for saving nine 'M
With that she climb'd a lofty pineR
The fox his hundred ruses triedS
And yet no safety foundT
A hundred times he falsifiedS
The nose of every houndT
Was here and there and everywhereU
Above and under groundT
But yet to stop he did not dareU
Pent in a hole it was no jokeV
To meet the terriers or the smokeV
So leaping into upper airU
He met two dogs that choked him thereU
-
Expedients may be too manyW
Consuming time to choose and tryX
On one but that as good as anyW
'Tis best in danger to relyX
