A
-
The Pha ton who drove a load of hayB
Once found his cart bemiredC
Poor man the spot was far awayB
From human help retiredC
In some rude country placeD
In Brittany as near as I can traceD
Near Quimper CorentanE
A town that poet never sangF
Which Fate they say puts in the traveller's pathG
When she would rouse the man to special wrathG
May Heaven preserve us from that routeC
But to our carter hale and stoutC
Fast stuck his cart he swore his worstC
And fill'd with rage extremeH
The mud holes now he cursedC
And now he cursed his teamH
And now his cart and loadC
Anon the like upon himself bestow'dC
Upon the god he call'd at lengthI
Most famous through the world for strengthI
'O help me Hercules ' cried heJ
'For if thy back of yoreK
This burly planet boreK
Thy arm can set me free '-
This prayer gone up from out a cloud there brokeL
A voice which thus in godlike accents spokeL
'The suppliant must himself bestirK
Ere Hercules will aid conferK
Look wisely in the proper quarterK
To see what hindrance can be foundC
Remove the execrable mud and mortarK
Which axle deep beset thy wheels aroundC
Thy sledge and crowbar takeM
And pry me up that stone or breakM
Now fill that rut upon the other sideC
Hast done it ' 'Yes ' the man repliedC
'Well ' said the voice 'I'll aid thee nowE
Take up thy whip ' 'I have but howE
My cart glides on with easeN
I thank thee Hercules '-
'Thy team ' rejoin'd the voice 'has light adoC
So help thyself and Heaven will help thee too '-
