A
-
Two fellows needing funds and boldB
A bearskin to a furrier soldB
Of which the bear was living stillC
But which they presently would killC
At least they said they wouldD
And if their word was goodD
It was a king of bears an Ursa MajorE
The biggest bear beneath the sunF
Its skin the chaps would wagerE
Was cheap at double costG
'Twould make one laugh at frostH
And make two robes as well as oneF
Old Dindenaut in sheep who dealtI
Less prized his sheep than they their peltI
In their account 'twas theirsJ
But in his own the bearsJ
By bargain struck upon the skinK
Two days at most must bring it inK
Forth went the two More easy found than gotL
The bear came growling at them on the trotL
Behold our dealers both confoundedM
As if by thunderbolt astoundedM
Their bargain vanish'd suddenly in airN
For who could plead his interest with a bearN
One of the friends sprung up a treeO
The other cold as ice could beO
Fell on his face feign'd deathP
And closely held his breathP
He having somewhere heard it saidQ
The bear ne'er preys upon the deadQ
Sir Bear sad blockhead was deceivedR
The prostrate man a corpse believedR
But half suspecting some deceitS
He feels and snuffs from head to feetS
And in the nostrils blowsT
The body's surely dead he thinksU
'I'll leave it ' says he 'for it stinks '-
And off into the woods he goesT
The other dealer from his treeO
Descending cautiously to seeO
His comrade lying in the dirtV
Consoling says 'It is a wonderE
That by the monster forced asunderE
We're after all more scared than hurtV
But ' addeth he 'what of the creature's skinK
He held his muzzle very nearW
What did he whisper in your ear '-
'He gave this caution Never dareN
Again to sell the skin of bearN
Its owner has not ceased to wear '-
