-
A blundering bat once stuck her headB
Into a wakeful weasel's bedB
Whereat the mistress of the houseC
A deadly foe of rats and miceD
Was making ready in a triceD
To eat the stranger as a mouseC
'What do you dare ' she said 'to creep inE
The very bed I sometimes sleep inE
Now after all the provocationF
I've suffer'd from your thievish nationF
Are you not really a mouseC
That gnawing pest of every houseC
Your special aim to do the cheese illG
Ay that you are or I'm no weasel '-
'I beg your pardon ' said the batH
'My kind is very far from thatH
What I a mouse Who told you such a lieI
Why ma'am I am a birdJ
And if you doubt my wordJ
Just see the wings with which I flyI
Long live the mice that cleave the sky '-
These reasons had so fair a showK
The weasel let the creature goK
-
By some strange fancy ledB
The same wise blunderheadB
But two or three days laterL
Had chosen for her restB
Another weasel's nestB
This last of birds a special haterL
New peril brought this step absurdB
Without a moment's thought or puzzleM
Dame weasel oped her peaked muzzleM
To eat th' intruder as a birdB
'Hold do not wrong me ' cried the batB
'I'm truly no such thing as thatB
Your eyesight strange conclusions gathersN
What makes a bird I pray Its feathersN
I'm cousin of the mice and ratsO
Great Jupiter confound the cats '-
The bat by such adroit replyingP
Twice saved herself from dyingP
-
And many a human strangerL
Thus turns his coat in dangerL
And sings as suits where'er he goesQ
'God save the king ' or 'save his foes '-
