One's native talent from its courseB
Cannot be turned aside by forceB
But poorly apes the country clownC
The polish'd manners of the townC
Their Maker chooses but a fewD
With power of pleasing to imbueD
Where wisely leave it we the massE
Unlike a certain fabled assE
That thought to gain his master's blessingF
By jumping on him and caressingF
'What ' said the donkey in his heartG
'Ought it to be that puppy's partG
To lead his useless lifeH
In full companionshipI
With master and his wifeH
While I must bear the whipI
What doth the cur a kiss to drawJ
Forsooth he only gives his pawJ
If that is all there needs to pleaseK
I'll do the thing myself with ease '-
Possess'd with this bright notionL
His master sitting on his chairM
At leisure in the open airM
He ambled up with awkward motionL
And put his talents to the proofN
Upraised his bruised and batter'd hoofN
And with an amiable mienO
His master patted on the chinP
The action gracing with a wordQ
The fondest bray that e'er was heardQ
O such caressing was there everR
Or melody with such a quaverR
'Ho Martin here a club a club bring '-
Out cried the master sore offendedS
So Martin gave the ass a drubbingF
And so the comedy was endedS
