A
-
From home and city spires one dayB
The swallow Progne flew awayB
And sought the bosky dellC
Where sang poor PhilomelC
'My sister ' Progne said 'how do you doD
'Tis now a thousand years since youD
Have been conceal'd from human viewD
I'm sure I have not seen your faceE
Once since the times of ThraceE
Pray will you never quit this dull retreat '-
'Where could I find ' said Philomel 'so sweet '-
'What sweet ' cried Progne 'sweet to wasteF
Such tones on beasts devoid of tasteF
Or on some rustic at the mostG
Should you by deserts be engross'dG
Come be the city's pride and boastG
Besides the woods remind of harmsE
That Tereus in them did your charms '-
'Alas ' replied the bird of songH
'The thought of that so cruel wrongH
Makes me from age to ageI
Prefer this hermitageJ
For nothing like the sight of menK
Can call up what I suffer'd then '-
