Party Strife. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDDEFGHFIIFJJJKK KKAAAAAKAKKKLLLAMAM KK

Among the beasts a feud aroseA
The lion as the story goesA
Once on a time laid downB
His sceptre and his crownB
And in his stead the beasts electedC
As often as it suited themD
A sort of king pro temD
Some animal they much respectedE
At first they all concurr'dF
The horse the stag the unicornG
Were chosen each in turnH
And then the noble birdF
That looks undazzled at the sunI
But party strife began to runI
Through burrow den and herdF
Some beasts proposed the patient oxJ
And others named the cunning foxJ
The quarrel came to bites and knocksJ
Nor was it duly settledK
Till many a beast high mettledK
Had bought an aching headK
Or possibly had bledK
The fox as one might well supposeA
At last above his rival roseA
But truth to say his reign was bootlessA
Of honour being rather fruitlessA
All prudent beasts began to seeA
The throne a certain charm had lostK
And won by strife as it must beA
Was hardly worth the pains it costK
So when his majesty retiredK
Few worthy beasts his seat desiredK
Especially now stood aloofL
The wise of head the swift of hoofL
The beasts whose breasts were battle proofL
It consequently came to passA
Not first but as we say in fineM
For king the creatures chose the assA
He for prime minister the swineM
-
'Tis thus that party spiritK
Is prone to banish meritK
