Look where we will throughout creationB
We look in vain for moderationB
There is a certain golden meanC
Which Nature's sovereign Lord I weenC
Design'd the path of all foreverD
Doth one pursue it NeverD
E'en things which by their nature blessE
Are turn'd to curses by excessE
-
The grain best gift of Ceres fairF
Green waving in the genial airF
By overgrowth exhausts the soilG
By superfluity of leavesH
Defrauds the treasure of its sheavesH
And mocks the busy farmer's toilG
Not less redundant is the treeI
So sweet a thing is luxuryI
The grain within due bounds to keepJ
Their Maker licenses the sheepJ
The leaves excessive to retrenchK
In troops they spread across the plainC
And nibbling down the hapless grainC
Contrive to spoil it root and branchL
So then with licence from on highM
The wolves are sent on sheep to preyN
The whole the greedy gluttons slayN
Or if they don't they tryM
-
Next men are sent on wolves to takeO
The vengeance now condignC
In turn the same abuse they makeO
Of this behest divineC
-
Of animals the human kindP
Are to excess the most inclinedP
On low and high we make the chargeQ
Indeed upon the race at largeQ
There liveth not the soul selectR
That sinneth not in this respectR
Of Nought too much the fact isS
All preach the truth none practiseS
