Hans Carvel's Ring Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGHDDIJKKLL MMNNOODDPPQQ

HANS CARVEL took when weak and late in lifeA
A girl with youth and beauteous charms to wifeA
And with her num'rous troubles cares and fearsB
For scarcely one without the rest appearsB
Bab such her name and daughter of a knightC
Was airy buxom formed for am'rous fightC
Hans holding jeers and cuckoldom in dreadD
Would have his precious rib with caution treadD
And nothing but the Bible e'er peruseE
All other books he daily would abuseF
Blamed secret visits frowned at loose attireG
And censured ev'ry thing gallants admireH
The dame howe'er was deaf to all he saidD
No preaching pleased but what to pleasure ledD
Which made the aged husband hold his tongueI
And wish for death since all round went wrongJ
Some easy moments he perhaps might getK
A full detail in hist'ry's page is metK
One night when company he'd had to dineL
And pretty well was fill'd with gen'rous wineL
Hans dreamed as near his wife he snoring layM
The devil came his compliments to payM
And having on his finger put a ringN
Said he friend Hans I know thou feel'st a stingN
Thy trouble 's great I pity much thy caseO
Let but this ring howe'er thy finger graceO
And while 'tis there I'll answer with my headD
THAT ne'er shall happen which is now thy dreadD
Hans quite delighted forced his finger throughP
You drunken beast cried Bab what would you doP
To love's devoirs quite lost you take no careQ
And now have thrust your finger God knows whereQ
