Death And The Woodman.[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACCDDBEEBFFGH IBIB

A poor wood chopper with his fagot loadA
Whom weight of years as well as load oppress'dB
Sore groaning in his smoky hut to restB
Trudged wearily along his homeward roadA
At last his wood upon the ground he throwsC
And sits him down to think o'er all his woesC
To joy a stranger since his hapless birthD
What poorer wretch upon this rolling earthD
No bread sometimes and ne'er a moment's restB
Wife children soldiers landlords public taxE
All wait the swinging of his old worn axeE
And paint the veriest picture of a man unblestB
On Death he calls Forthwith that monarch grimF
Appears and asks what he should do for himF
'Not much indeed a little help I lackG
To put these fagots on my back 'H
-
Death ready stands all ills to cureI
But let us not his cure inviteB
Than die 'tis better to endureI
Is both a manly maxim and a rightB
