Death And The Woodman.[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBACCDDBEEBFFGH IBIBA poor wood chopper with his fagot load | A |
Whom weight of years as well as load oppress'd | B |
Sore groaning in his smoky hut to rest | B |
Trudged wearily along his homeward road | A |
At last his wood upon the ground he throws | C |
And sits him down to think o'er all his woes | C |
To joy a stranger since his hapless birth | D |
What poorer wretch upon this rolling earth | D |
No bread sometimes and ne'er a moment's rest | B |
Wife children soldiers landlords public tax | E |
All wait the swinging of his old worn axe | E |
And paint the veriest picture of a man unblest | B |
On Death he calls Forthwith that monarch grim | F |
Appears and asks what he should do for him | F |
'Not much indeed a little help I lack | G |
To put these fagots on my back ' | H |
- | |
Death ready stands all ills to cure | I |
But let us not his cure invite | B |
Than die 'tis better to endure | I |
Is both a manly maxim and a right | B |
