The Holidays Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB CDAD EFGF GHEH AIJI KLEL EMNMAh don't you remember 'tis almost December | A |
And soon will the holidays come | B |
Oh 'twill be so funny I've plenty of money | C |
I'll buy me a sword and a drum | B |
- | |
Thus said little Harry unwilling to tarry | C |
Impatient from school to depart | D |
But we shall discover this holiday lover | A |
Knew little what was in his heart | D |
- | |
For when on returning he gave up his learning | E |
Away from his sums and his books | F |
Though playthings surrounded and sweetmeats abounded | G |
Chagrin still appear'd in his looks | F |
- | |
Though first they delighted his toys were now slighted | G |
And thrown away out of his sight | H |
He spent every morning in stretching and yawning | E |
Yet went to bed weary at night | H |
- | |
He had not that treasure which really makes pleasure | A |
A secret discover'd by few | I |
You'll take it for granted more playthings he wanted | J |
Oh naught was something to do | I |
- | |
We must have employment to give us enjoyment | K |
And pass the time cheerfully away | L |
And study and reading give pleasure exceeding | E |
The pleasures of toys and of play | L |
- | |
To school now returning to study and learning | E |
With eagerness Harry applied | M |
He felt no aversion to books or exertion | N |
Nor yet for the holidays sigh'd | M |
