The Disappointment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MGIG CNCN

In tears to her mother poor Harriet cameA
Let us listen to hear what she saysB
O see dear mamma it is pouring with rainC
We cannot go out in the chaiseD
-
All the week I have long'd for this holiday soE
And fancied the minutes were hoursF
And now that I'm dress'd and all ready to goE
Do look at those terrible showersF
-
I'm sorry my dear her kind mother repliedG
The rain disappoints us to dayH
But sorrow still more that you fret for a rideG
In such an extravagant wayH
-
These slight disappointments are sent to prepareI
For what may hereafter befallJ
For seasons of real disappointment and careI
Which commonly happen to allJ
-
For just like to day with its holiday lostK
Is life and its comforts at bestL
Our pleasures are blighted our purposes cross'dK
To teach us it is not our restL
-
And when those distresses and crosses appearM
With which you may shortly be triedG
You'll wonder that ever you wasted a tearI
On merely the loss of a rideG
-
But though the world's pleasures are fleeting and vainC
Religion is lasting and trueN
Real pleasure and peace in her paths you may gainC
Nor will disappointment ensueN
