Extremely pleased And little Maymie freedA
From her task of instructing ran to showB
Her wondrous colored picture to and froB
Among the companyC

'And how comes it ' saidD
Some one to Mr Hammond 'that insteadD
Of the inventor's life you did not chooseE
The artist's since the world can better loseE
A cutting box or reaper than it canF
A noble picture painted by a manF
Endowed with gifts this drawing would suggest'D
Holding the picture up to show the restD
' There now ' chimed in the wife her pale face litD
Like winter snow with sunrise over itD
'That's what I'm always asking him But heC
Well as he's answering you he answers meC
With that same silent suffocating smileG
He's wearing now '-

For quite a little whileG
No further speech from anyone althoughB
All looked at Mr Hammond and that slowB
Immutable mild smile of his And thenH
The encouraged querist asked him yet againH
Why was it and etcetera with allI
The rest expectant waiting 'round the wallI
Until the gentle Mr Hammond saidD
He'd answer with a ' parable ' insteadD
About 'a dreamer' that he used to knowB
'An artist' 'master' all in embryoB
