What Is Prayer? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FCFC GDGD HIH JKJK LMLM NONO PCPQ RERE STST

Prayer is the soul's sincere desireA
Unuttered or expressedB
The motion of a hidden fireA
That trembles in the breastB
-
Prayer is the burden of a sighC
The falling of a tearD
The upward glancing of an eyeC
When none but God is nearE
-
Prayer is the simplest form of speechF
That infant lips can tryC
Prayer the sublimest strains that reachF
The Majesty on highC
-
Prayer is the Christian's vital breathG
The Christian's native airD
His watchword at the gates of deathG
He enters heaven with prayerD
-
Prayer is the contrite sinner's voiceH
Returning from his waysI
While angels in their songs rejoiceH
And cry 'Behold he prays '-
-
The saints in prayer appear as oneJ
In word in deed and mindK
While with the Father and the SonJ
Sweet fellowship they findK
-
No prayer is made by man aloneL
The Holy Spirit pleadsM
And Jesus on th' eternal throneL
For sinners intercedesM
-
O Thou by Whom we come to GodN
The Life the Truth the WayO
The path of prayer Thyself hast trodN
Lord teach us how to prayO
-
As fail the waters from the deepP
As summer brooks run dryC
Man lieth down in dreamless sleepP
His life is vanityQ
-
Man lieth down no more to wakeR
Till yonder arching sphereE
Shall with a roll of thunder breakR
And nature disappearE
-
Oh hide me till Thy wrath be pastS
Thou who canst slay or saveT
Hide me where hope may anchor fastS
In my Redeemer's graveT
