There is a flower a little flowerA
With silver crest and golden eyeB
That welcomes every changing hourA
And weathers every skyB
-
The prouder beauties of the fieldC
In gay but quick succession shineD
Race after race their honors yieldC
They flourish and declineD
-
But this small flower to Nature dearE
While moons and stars their courses runF
Wreathes the whole circle of the yearE
Companion of the SunF
-
It smiles upon the lap of MayG
To sultry August spreads its charmsH
Lights pale October on his wayG
And twines December's armsH
-
The purple heath and golden broomI
On moory mountains catch the galeJ
O'er lawns the lily sheds perfumeI
The violet in the valeJ
-
But this bold floweret climbs the hillK
Hides in the forest haunts the glenL
Plays on the margin of the rillK
Peeps round the fox's denL
-
Within the garden's cultured roundM
It shares the sweet carnation's bedN
And blooms on consecrated groundM
In honor of the deadN
-
The lambkin crops its crimson gemO
The wild bee murmurs on its breastP
The blue fly bends its pensile stemO
Light o'er the skylark's nestP
-
'Tis Flora's page in every placeQ
In every season fresh and fairR
It opens with perennial graceQ
And blossoms everywhereR
-
On waste and woodland rock and plainS
Its humble buds unheeded riseT
The Rose has but a summer reignS
The Daisy never diesT
