It is night and I am alone forlornA
on the hill of storms The wind isB
heard in the mountain The torrentC
shrieks down the rock No hut receivesD
me from the rain forlorn on the hill ofE
windsF
-
Rise moon from behind thyG
clouds stars of the night appearH
Lead me some light to the place whereI
my love rests from the toil of the chaseJ
his bow near him unstrung his dogsK
panting around him But here I mustL
sit alone by the rock of the mossyK
stream The stream and the windM
roar nor can I hear the voice of myG
loveE
-
Why delayeth my Shalgar why theN
son of the hill his promise Here isK
the rock and the tree and here theN
roaring stream Thou promisedst withO
night to be here Ah whither is myG
Shalgar gone With thee I would flyG
my father with thee my brother ofE
pride Our race have long been foesK
but we are not foes O ShalgarI
-
Cease a little while O wind streamP
be thou silent a while let my voice beQ
heard over the heath let my wandererI
hear me Shalgar it is I who call HereI
is the tree and the rock Shalgar myG
love I am here Why delayest thouR
thy coming Alas no answerI
-
Lo the moon appeareth TheN
flood is bright in the vale The rocksK
are grey on the face of the hill ButS
I see him not on the brow his dogsK
before him tell not that he is comingT
Here I must sit aloneU
-
But who are these that lie beyondV
me on the heath Are they my loveE
and my brother Speak to me O myG
friends they answer not My soul isK
tormented with fears Ah they areI
dead Their swords are red from theN
fight O my brother my brotherI
why hast thou slain my Shalgar whyG
O Shalgar hast thou slain my brotherI
Dear were ye both to me speak to meQ
hear my voice sons of my love ButS
alas they are silent silent for everI
Cold are their breast of clayW
-
Oh from the rock of the hillX
from the top of the mountain of windsK
speak ye ghosts of the dead speakY
and I will not be afraid WhitherI
are ye gone to rest In what cave ofE
the hill shall I find youZ
-
I sit in my grief I wait for morningT
in my tears Rear the tomb yeQ
friends of the dead but close it notA2
till I come My life flieth away like aN
dream why should I stay behindM
Here shall I rest with my friends by theN
stream of the founding rock WhenB2
night comes on the hill when the windM
is up on the heath my ghost shall standC2
in the wind and mourn the death ofE
my friends The hunter shall hearI
from his booth He shall fear butS
love my voice For sweet shall my voiceK
be for my friends for pleasant wereI
they both to meQ
