Autumn is dark on the mountainsA
grey mist rests on the hills TheB
whirlwind is heard on the heath DarkC
rolls the river through the narrow plainD
A tree stands alone on the hill andE
marks the grave of Connal The leavesF
whirl round with the wind and strewG
the grave of the dead At times areH
seen here the ghosts of the deceasedI
when the musing hunter alone stalksJ
slowly over the heathK
-
Who can reach the source of thyL
race O Connal and who recount thyL
Fathers Thy family grew like an oakM
on the mountain which meeteth theB
wind with its lofty head But now itN
is torn from the earth Who shall supplyL
the place of ConnalL
-
Here was the din of arms andE
here the groans of the dying MournfulL
are the wars of Fingal O ConnalL
it was here thou didst fall Thine armO
was like a storm thy sword a beamP
of the sky thy height a rock on theB
plain thine eyes a furnace of fireQ
Louder than a storm was thy voiceR
when thou confoundedst the field WarriorsS
fell by thy sword as the thistle byL
the staff of a boyT
-
Dargo the mighty came on like aB
cloud of thunder His brows were contractedU
and dark His eyes like twoG
caves in a rock Bright rose theirV
swords on each side dire was the clangW
of their steelL
-
The daughter of Rinval was nearX
Crimora bright in the armour of manY
her hair loose behind her bow in herQ
hand She followed the youth to theB
war Connal her much beloved SheZ
drew the string on Dargo but erringA2
pierced her Connal He falls like anY
oak on the plain like a rock from theB
shaggy hill What shall she do haplessB2
maid He bleeds her Connal diesC2
All the night long she cries and all theB
day O Connal my love and myL
friend With grief the sad mournerQ
diedD2
-
Earth here incloseth the loveliestD2
pair on the hill The grass grows betweenE2
the stones of their tomb I sit inF2
the mournful shade The wind sighsC2
through the grass and their memoryZ
rushes on my mind Undisturbed youG
now sleep together in the tomb of theB
mountain you rest aloneG2
