a Greek LegendA
-
-
-
Zacho the King rode out of oldB
And truth is what I tellC
With saddle and spurs and a rein of goldB
To find the door of HellC
-
And round around him surged the deadD
With soft and lustrous eyesE
Why came you here old friend they saidD
Unwise unwise unwiseE
-
You should have left to the prince your sonF
Spurs and saddle and reinG
Your bright and morning days are doneF
You ride not out againH
-
I came to greet my friends who fellC
Sword scattered from my sideI
And when I've drunk the wine of HellC
I'll out again and rideI
-
But Charon rose and caught his hairJ
In fingers sharp and longK
Loose me old ferryman play fairJ
Try if my arm be strongK
-
Thrice drave he hard on Charon's breastL
And struck him thrice to groundM
Till stranger ghosts came out o' the westL
And sat like stars aroundM
-
And thrice old Charon rose up highN
And seized him as beforeO
Loose me a broken man am IN
And fight with you no more ''-
-
Zacho arise my home is nearP
I pray you walk with meQ
I've hung my tent so full of fearP
You well may shake to seeQ
-
Home to my home come they who fightR
Who fight but not to winS
Without my tent is black as nightR
And red as fire withinS
-
Though winds blow cold and I grow oldB
My tent is fast and fairJ
The pegs are dead men's stout right armsT
The cords their golden hairJ
