Zacho the King rode out of oldA
And truth is what I tellB
With saddle and spurs and a rein of goldA
To find the door of HellB
-
And round around him surged the deadC
With soft and lustrous eyesD
Why came you here old friend they saidC
Unwise unwise unwiseD
-
You should have left to the prince your sonE
Spurs and saddle and reinF
Your bright and morning days are doneE
You ride not out againG
-
I came to greet my friends who fellB
Sword scattered from my sideH
And when I've drunk the wine of HellB
I'll out again and rideH
-
But Charon rose and caught his hairI
In fingers sharp and longJ
Loose me old ferryman play fairI
Try if my arm be strongJ
-
Thrice drave he hard on Charon's breastK
And struck him thrice to groundL
Till stranger ghosts came out o' the westK
And sat like stars aroundL
-
And thrice old Charon rose up highM
And seized him as beforeN
Loose me a broken man am IM
And fight with you no more ''-
-
Zacho arise my home is nearO
I pray you walk with meP
I've hung my tent so full of fearO
You well may shake to seeP
-
Home to my home come they who fightQ
Who fight but not to winR
Without my tent is black as nightQ
And red as fire withinR
-
Though winds blow cold and I grow oldA
My tent is fast and fairI
The pegs are dead men's stout right armsS
The cords their golden hairI
