From Heaven's Gate to Hampstead HeathA
Young Bacchus and his crewB
Came tumbling down and o'er the townC
Their bursting trumpets blewB
-
The silver night was wildly brightD
And madly shone the MoonE
To hear a song so clear and strongF
With such a lovely tuneE
-
From London's houses huts and flatsG
Came busmen snobs and EarlsH
And ugly men in bowler hatsG
With charming little girlsH
-
Sir Moses came with eyes of flameI
Judd who is like a bloaterB
The brave Lord Mayor in coach and pairB
King Edward in his motorB
-
Far in a rosy mist withdrawnJ
The God and all his crewB
Silenus pulled by nymphs a faunJ
A satyr drenched in dewB
-
Smiled as they wept those shining tearsK
Only Immortals knowJ
Whose feet are set among the starsL
Above the shifting snowJ
-
And one spake out into the nightD
Before they left for everB
Rejoice rejoice and his great voiceM
Rolled like a splendid riverB
-
He spake in Greek which Britons speakN
Seldom and circumspectlyB
But Mr Judd that man of mudO
Translated it correctlyB
-
And when they heard that happy wordP
Policemen leapt and ambledQ
The busmen pranced the maidens dancedR
The men in bowlers gambolledR
-
A wistful Echo stayed behindR
To join the mortal dancesS
But Mr Judd with words unkindR
Rejected her advancesS
-
And passing down through London TownJ
She stopped for all was lonelyB
Attracted by a big brass plateR
Inscribed FOR MEMBERS ONLYB
-
And so she went to ParliamentR
But those ungainly menJ
Woke up from sleep and turned aboutR
And fell asleep againJ
