My Friend Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKM NONO

I had a friend who battled for the truthA
With stubborn heart and obstinate despairB
Till all his beauty left him and his youthA
And there were few to love him anywhereB
-
Then would he wander out among the gravesC
And think of dead men lying in a rowD
Or standing on a cliff observe the wavesC
And hear the wistful sound of winds belowD
-
And yet they told him nothing So he soughtE
The twittering forest at the break of dayF
Or on fantastic mountains shaped a thoughtE
As lofty and impenitent as theyF
-
And next he went in wonder through a townG
Slowly by day and hurriedly by nightH
And watched men walking up the street and downG
With timorous and terrible delightH
-
Weary he drew man's wisdom from a bookI
And pondered on the high words spoken of oldJ
Pacing a lamplit room but soon forsookI
The golden sentences that left him coldJ
-
After a woman found him and his headK
Lay on her breast till he forgot his painL
In gentle kisses on a midnight bedK
And welcomed royal winged joy againM
-
When love became a loathing as it mustN
He knew not where to turn and he was wiseO
Being now old to sink among the dustN
And rest his rebel heart and close his eyesO
