Mary Magdalen Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEFGG BAHHII DDJBKKD LLMNAB OO

O eyes that strip the souls of menA
There came to me the MagdalenB
Her blue robe with a cord was boundC
Her hair with Lenten lilies crownedC
Arise she said God calls for theeD
Turned to new paths thy feet must beD
Leave the fever and the feastE
Leave the friend thou lovest bestF
For thou must walk in barefoot waysG
To give my dear Lord Jesus praiseG
-
Then answered I Sweet MagdalenB
God's servant once beloved of menA
Why didst thou change old ways for newH
Thy trailing red for corded blueH
Roses for lilies on thy browI
Rich splendour for a barren vowI
-
Gentle of speech she answered meD
Sir I was sick with revelryD
True I have scarred the night with sinJ
A pale and tawdry heroineB
But once I heard a voice that saidK
'Who lives in sin is surely deadK
But whoso turns to follow meD
Hath joy and immortality '-
-
O Mary not for this I criedL
Didst thou renounce thy scented prideL
Not for a taste of endless yearsM
Or barren joy apart from tearsN
Didst thou desert the courts of menA
Tell me thy truth sweet MagdalenB
-
She trembled and her eyes grew dimO
For love of Him for love of HimO
